Funded by the Emeril Lagasse Foundation Gilda’s Academy was granted the funds that built and completed the playground and the garden. What do children learn through gardening experiences?
Language- The garden extends classroom learning from stories and songs that begin indoors to experiences of growing the vegetables eaten in stories.
Science/Math- Children learn there are different kinds of seeds for different kinds of plants as they beginning learning to classify
Social/Emotional- With a partner children discuss and how they will dig, plant and water their seeds and plants forming important skills for teamwork.
Physical- Children while gardening develop large motor skills through bending and stooping while turning the soil and weeding. The fine motor skills are enhanced through putting small seeds in the ground and planting seedlings.
